I
am a movie buff. My husband and
I are seriously addicted to films. On television we rarely watch anything other
than the news and the TCM channel (Turner Classic Movies, preferably hosted by
Robert Osborne who knows everything about the business), and of course, a few
baseball games. But it’s movies that I love. In fact, nearly every film, other
than your basic slam bam action movie, holds my interest for one reason or another.
Here are a few of my favorite
flicks (and this segment will change monthly). But these particular films are
ones I can and have seen over and over again. They’re all available on DVD, different
in tone and style and all incredibly watchable! 1.
The entire The Thin Man series starring William Powell and Myrna Loy Sexy,
funny and great fun to watch, and a subtle history lesson of other times in America.
Wait until you see the palm tree evening dress Myrna Loy wears to the prizefight!
2. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin This is hilarious. Wait until you see
Steve Martin as “the young prince.” We never get tired of the incredible humor
and both my husband and I can quote our favorite lines and do!
3. Lost in Translation starring Bill Murray and Scarlet Johansson The most
romantic flick and with just one kiss in the entire film! Thoughtful and funny
with a great soundtrack 4. Shopgirl
starring Steve Martin and Clare Danes Another romantic film in the most offbeat
way. A different spin on romance and delicately and movingly handled. Plus, Steve
Martin wrote the screenplay from his novella and I think he is an amazing writer.
Comedy-wise, his Bowfinger with Eddie Murphy is simply crazy fun! 5.
This is Spinal Tap starring Rob Reiner, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean
& Harry Shearer This fake documentary following a down and out rock group is unbelievably
hilarious. It’s so “real,” people were sending the group fan letters and so the
actors took the music on the road. (We saw them at the Warfield in San Francisco
years ago—my Spinal Tap ballcap is a prized possession!) Christopher Guest (now
Lord Guest!) and the others went on to make, as a repertory company, other favorite
comedies including Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman.
6. Topsy-Turvey is British director Mike Leigh’s homage to turn of the
century London and the musical theater. It’s a fabulous film for anyone who loves
the theater and/or music and centers around those fascinating characters Gilbert
& Sullivan and their collaboration of The Mikado. You will feel as though you
are there! |
